ROM-Monitors

SW debuggers are efficient,  portable and cheap tools for HLL (High Level Language) code debugging; they can be used during the whole life span of a product, beginning from the development stages and continuing after the product is completely finished and working; SW debuggers require very few HW accessories (usually an RS-232 connector), thus enabling easy code update/upgrade of the finished product.

• are pure SW debuggers
• there is no connection to target
• code and data are loaded and run only on the host platform
• I/O devices are SW implemented

ROM-Monitors

• reside in  target memory
• have to be programmed in a Flash\E(E)PROM, at fixed addresses
• use some target resources
• interfere with customer's application
• code and data are loaded and run only on target
• communicate with target via RS-232 (most common)
